BEIJING, August 5 -- Property sales across 30 cities in China fell 4 percent in July as prices soared and supplies dwindled with big cities feeling the pinch for the first time this year, analysts said.     According to the UWIN property transaction system, the floor space of apartments sold in July dipped 5.37 percent over June to 1.04 million sq m.     Statistics put out by the Beijing Real Estate Transaction website showed that sales of forward delivery housing in Beijing fell to 10,862 units last month, compared to 12,840 units in June.     Property transactions in Guangzhou fell 36 percent over June. The figure is only half of that of May, said Guangzhou's official property website.     "The fall has been triggered by high property prices and shrinking supplies in some cities," said Qin Xiaomei, head of research, Jones Lang LaSalle Beijing. "Property developers have slowed down the pace of new projects in the second half after robust sales in the first half," she said.     Property prices in China's 70 major cities were up 0.8 percent in June, the fourth month-on-month growth in a row this year, according to statistics from the National Development and Reform Commission.     Beijing and Shanghai reported a month-on-month growth of 0.4 and 1 percentage points respectively in June, with prices skyrocketing to record highs of 2007 in some areas, fueled by strong investment, purchase demand and higher land prices.     The high prices have also made most of the prospective buyers wary of making fresh investments.     Li Wei, a 29-year-old company executive in Beijing, said he would prefer to adopt a wait-and-see attitude as the high prices have made most of his preferred apartments unaffordable.     "The unit price of the apartment has soared to 20,000 yuan per sq m from 14,500 yuan per sq m 40 days ago," Li said.     For others like Zhang Li, a property speculator from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, this is the time to cash in. The apartment she bought in November last year has gained 40 percent in the past six months, largely exceeding her expectations.     "I am a bit uneasy with such a rapid increase in such a short period of time," said Zhang, who has property investment experience of more than a decade. "With people's income and economic fundamentals seeing no big change, I think selling the property will be a safer bet."     According to Grant Ji, director of Savills (Beijing), a UK-based real estate service provider, the fall in transaction volume is still within a normal band.     "July was an off-season for the housing market," said Ji.     "With no big shift likely in the macroeconomic policy during the second half, property prices are unlikely see a big fall as the market is still awash with funds," Ji said.

BEIJING/TAIPEI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan has started building homes for hundreds of homeless families left by Typhoon Morakot with assistance from the mainland.     Prefabricated houses with blue roof and white walls, donated by the Chinese mainland, are being set up in Pingtung County in the south of the island.     Local authorities told Xinhua Saturday that so far more than 400 homeless families have applied for the prefab houses, which have been tested safe.     Recovering signs appear in the island as Xinhua reporters saw children in the county studied in a mobile bookstore on rubble, and villages in Kaohsiung County sold homemade handbags to save money for reconstruction.     In addition to the Taiwan authorities' three-year reconstruction budget of about 100 billion New Taiwan Dollars (3.12 billion U.S. dollars), the Chinese mainland has contributed 781.8 million yuan (115 million U.S. dollars) two weeks after the disaster hit Taiwan.     The mainland's donation came from all circles of the country, including people in Sichuan Province who received generous support from Taiwan compatriots and Buddhists and monks who pray for blessings of the typhoon victims in the island.     "We will never forget the Taiwan rescuers who helped us live through the Wenchuan earthquake last year," said a worker of Dongfang Steam Turbine Works in Sichuan's Mianzhu City.     The company donated one million yuan to Taiwan victims with another 500,000 yuan raised by the company's workers.     The mainland has promised to spare no effort and offer medical, rescue, engineering and other available personnel or equipment that Taiwan compatriots need.     On Friday afternoon, 18 tonnes of vegetable was shipped to Kinmen from its closest mainland city Xiamen of Fujian Province as an emergent support to ease the vegetable shortage caused by the typhoon.     "We are contacting the agricultural associations in Taiwan and if they request we can quickly collect large amount of vegetable and send them to help Taiwan compatriots," said Guo Hao, a food company boss in Fujian.     Other disaster-relieving materials from the mainland are on the way to the island. The second batch of prefab houses arrived in Kaohsiung on Saturday afternoon and three mainland engineers headed for Taiwan to help install those houses.     The mainland's ports, maritime and transport authorities have provided favorable procedures for the disaster relief materials to Taiwan.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's top aircraft manufacturer, said Sunday total sales revenue in its auto business would reach 30 billion yuan (about 4.39 billion U.S. dollars) by 2017.     Geng Ruguang, deputy general manager of AVIC, said making big passenger vehicles has become the the corporations's guiding plan for development in its auto business.     Geng revealed the figure at a ceremony marking AVIC and its partner Volvol's new product Silver 900 series going into production line.     The series is a new type of big and luxurious passenger vehicles, 12 meters long, which could be used for road transportation, tourist reception, and military equipment.     The Silver 900 series was developed by Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation, a joint venture established in 1994 by AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co. ltd, and the Swedish bus and truck maker Volvo company.     The Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation expects to produce annually 4,000 vehicles by 2014. HAIKOU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of two people were retrieved in south China's island province of Hainan on Monday, bringing the death toll from the tropical storm Goni to five, local officials said.     The fourth was a fisherman who was killed when the fishing boat "Qiongdanzhou 00301" was wrecked at the Yangpu Port, while the fifth one, a fisherwoman, died after "Qiongdanzhou 52153" sank near Danzhou City, officials said.     Another two fishermen on "Qiongdanzhou 00301" and "Qiongdanzhou 00878", as well as four crew members on a Cambodian vessel are still missing, said an official with the Hainan marine search and rescue center.     The difficulty of rescue has increased as the provincial meteorologic center warned of continuous thunderstorms in northwestern Hainan in the following 24 hours, he said.     More than 1.6 million people in Hainan Province were affected by Goni, which forced local authorities to relocate 92,000, officials said.     It toppled more than 575 houses and damaged 2,311, as well as inundated 68,000 hectares of cropland, he said.     Goni landed in Hainan Wednesday and left China at 5 p.m. Sunday.

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will implement a nation-wide investigation to find more research and development (R&D) resources to promote the country's agriculture, manufacturing, information technologies and other major industries.      The investigation will provide basic scientific data for policy-making of the nation's social and economic development during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), the Ministry of Science and Technology said in a circular on its official website Saturday.     It will also help the government monitor and evaluate the ability to make independent innovation as an effort to make China an innovation-oriented country, it said.     Six ministries and commissions of the State Council, China's Cabinet, will jointly conduct and finish the investigation by the end of the year. The first such investigation was conducted in 2000.     Statisticians around the nation will survey R&D-intensive enterprises and institutions in all the major industries.     The survey will focus on the personnel, spending, equipment, projects and institutions for research and development.     Moreover, many experts believe the investigation will help China stop wasteful spending in scientific research and promote the national sharing of resources, such as to stop squandering money in redundant purchases of laboratory equipment.     China's 2008 research and development spending of the GDP was 457 billion yuan (66.9 billion U.S.     dollars), an increase of 23.2 percent from 2007, accounting for 1.52 percent of the annual GDP.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first seven companies applying for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-alike market in China, have got green lights from the country's securities regulator on Thursday.     They are in the fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars), from the IPOs, according to China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     "This means the seven enterprises are eligible to list on the market, but they still have some flaws in information issuance, which need to be improved," said Jiang Xinhong, a member of the review commission.     The flaws don't hinder the listings, but these enterprises should go through some necessary procedures before getting listed, said the CSRC.     The CSRC had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10, since it started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26.

Police abruptly shut down the nearly 300-hectare market in northeastern Moscow on June 29 after disclosure by .Russian Federal Supervision Service for Consumer Rights Protection and People Welfare of various illegal and irregular operation in the markets Russian Prosecutor General's Office said the shutdown was due to bad sanitary and fire control conditions, but local media believe many factors have prompted the closure.     A June report tendered by Minister of Industry and Trade Victor Khristenko stated that contraband goods not only cost the government great loss in taxation, but also undermine the development of the country's light industry.     The report suggested promoting legal, standardized chainstores and cracking down on terminal markets notorious for the sales of counterfeited and shoddy products and goods entered the country through "grey customs clearance".     Russian Federal Supervision Service for Consumer Rights Protection and People Welfare, Prosecutor General's Office, Federal Migration Service , Moscow municipal government and other government agencies even proposed shutting down the market for good.     The latest poll conducted by research group Levada Center also showed that among 94 percent of Moscow citizens who know about the closure, 67 percent support the move. Another online poll conducted by newspaper Izvestia also showed that over 80 percent of netizens are in favor of the shutdown. 　　"GREY CUSTOMS CLEARANCE" HAMPERS SINO-RUSSIAN TRADE     Over the past 20 years, the people-to-people trade between China and Russia has undoubtedly made great contribution to bilateral economic and trade cooperation, said Gao Xiyun, Economic Minister Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Russia.     However, it is also an undeniable fact that problems such as "grey customs clearance" had seriously hampered the health development the bilateral people-to-people trade, he said.     The so-called "grey customs clearance" is a long-standing practice that involves intermediaries handling customs clearance for bulk commodities loaded in planes or containers trucks.     After paying the so-called "customs clearance companies," the consignors of the goods do not have to deal with Russian customs authorities in person. Consequently they receive no official customs declaration documents.     In recent years, the Russian government has strived to rectify its domestic market order. For a time, goods that entered the country through "grey customs clearance" were regarded as contraband, and their owners would face penalties, including fines or even outright confiscation.     Prior to the market closure, on Sep. 11, 2008, the Investigation Committee at the Russian Prosecutor General's Office sealed up a large part of Chinese merchants' container storehouse in the Cherkizovsky market. 　　CHINESE BUSINESSMEN NEED TO CHANGE MODES OF OPERATION     Some 60,000 Chinese are doing business in Cherkizovsky Market, making the market the biggest Chinese business community in Moscow and even the whole Russia, according to figures from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Russia.     The abrupt closure of the market, in addition to the closedown of the container storehouse, has caused great economic loss to Chinese merchants and their domestic enterprises.     Gennady Gudkov, Deputy Chairman of the Security Committee of the Russian State Duma said though the closure of the market is justified, the vendors there should be given advance notice of the closure.     Gao Hucheng said China has no objections to Russia's crackdown on smuggling, but the Russian side should protect the personal and property safety of the Chinese citizens without hurting their dignity. While enforcing the law, the Russian side should try its best to keep the economic losses of the Chinese business people to the minimum.     Some Chinese analysts noted that Russia's cracking down on smuggling and rectifying domestic markets would help regulate trade channels, improve trade environment, therefore conducive to sustained and sound development of bilateral trade in the long run.     Li Huilai, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Russia, said the only way out for Chinese merchants is to transform their operation mode and do their business in accordance with law and regulations. 　　JOINT EFFORTS URGED TO EXPAND NORMAL TRADE CHANNELS     In recent years, China has strengthened export supervision and instructed Chinese enterprises and businessmen in Russia to operate honestly and abide by the laws and regulations there.     China and Russia share a common goal in creating a trade environment that is standardized, transparent and convenient.     In June, China and Russia established a customs cooperation committee and set up a long-term mechanism to normalize bilateral trade order in a bid to raise the level of customs clearance facilitation and create favorable conditions for the crackdown and eventual eradication of the "grey customs clearance."     Gao's delegation, comprising officials from the ministries of commerce and foreign affairs, the General Administration of Customs and trade officials from Zhejiang, Fujian and Hebei provinces reached three consensus with the Russian side on the closure issue.     The two sides agreed to further develop the Sino-Russian strategic cooperative partnership, deepen bilateral trade cooperation and properly settle the closure issue through friendly negotiations.     The governments of China and Russia attached great importance to their strategic cooperative partnership and had agreed that the sudden closure of the market should not hurt their friendly cooperation, Gao said.     The two sides should promptly initiate a customs cooperation mechanism, and develop a work plan to stop illegal activities including "grey customs clearance," regulate customs declaration channels and raise customs clearance efficiency.     Analysts believe that with the constant improvement and development of Sino-Russian trade and economic cooperation, the issue of "grey customs clearance" could be fully resolved.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao on Thursday morning reviewed Chinese troops in central Beijing as the country celebrated the 60th National Day.     Standing in a black open-roof limousine on Chang'an Avenue, Hu was greeted by Fang Fenghui, commander-in-chief of the full-dress military parade. Fang reported: "Comrade chairman, assembly of the reviewing troops is completed, please review!"     Amid army songs played by a 1,300-member brass band, the home-made Red Flag limo drove eastward along Chang'an avenue, where Hu inspected 44 ground square formations composed of the three services of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), armed police, army reserves, and militia.     His car was followed by the limo of Fang Fenghui and an alternate one.     Wearing a high-collared Mao suit, Hu repeated salutes through a microphone: "Greetings, comrades!" and "Comrades, you are working hard!"
