BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders took part in a voluntary tree planting activity at the Olympic Forest Park here on Saturday.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, as well as Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang also planted trees at the park next to the national stadium, the main venue of the Beijing Olympic Games.     Covering some 680 hectares in the north of Beijing, the park is a major part of the 2008 Olympics infrastructure, which is expected to improve the city's environment and air quality.     Hu said during the activity that the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are approaching. He urged Beijingers to support the Green Olympics initiative and make the city greener and more beautiful before athletes from worldwide come in August. However, many have acknowledged that the city has done much to improve its air quality.     This is the fifth time since 2001 for top leaders to take part in planting at the park, where nearly 500,000 trees have been planted.     Hu said voluntary tree planting is an effective way to get everyone involved in improving the environment. "For every tree we plant today, we gain another spot of green in the future," he said.     About 2 million Beijingers took part in planting activities in the capital on Saturday, which is Beijing's 24th voluntary tree planting day. 

BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- China's military would increase cooperation with foreign armed forces in order to contribute more to common development, Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said on Thursday.     At a reception at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to mark the 81st anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Liang said, "China will take the road of peaceful development, unswervingly, and carry out an independent and self-reliant, peaceful diplomatic policy and a defensive defense policy, no matter how the international situation changes."     A member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and a state councilor, Liang stressed the fundamental necessity of the Army's acceptance of "the absolute leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC)". BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday denounced the U.S. government's decision to sell arms worth of about 6.5 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan.     Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said the Chinese government and people firmly opposed this action which seriously damaged China's interests and the Sino-U.S. relations.     The U.S. government, in spite of China's repeated solemn representations, on Friday notified the Congress about its plan to sell arms to Taiwan, including Patriot III anti-missile system, E-2T airborne early warning aircraft upgrade system, Apache helicopters and other equipment.     Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei has summoned the charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy to China to raise strong protest against the U.S. move, according to spokesman.     China firmly opposes to arms sales by the United States to Taiwan, said Liu, noting that this has been a consistent and clear stance of China.     The U.S. government's agreement on arms sale to Taiwan severely violated the principles set in the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the communique on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan signed on Aug. 17, 1982, grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, endangered Chinese national security, and disturbed the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, Liu stressed.     "It is only natural that this move would stir up strong indignation of the Chinese government and people," he said.     "We sternly warn the United States that there is only one China in the world, and that Taiwan is a part of China," Liu said.     He said nobody could shake the strong will of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to oppose external interference, and nobody could stop the efforts to promote cross Strait exchanges and opening a new chapter of peace in cross Strait relations.     China urged the United States to recognize that it is seriously harmful to sell arms to Taiwan, Liu said, noting that the United States should honor its commitment to stick to one-China policy, abide by the three China-U.S joint communiques, and oppose the so-called "Taiwan independence".     Liu said the United States should immediately take actions to correct its mistakes, cancel the proposed arms sale, stop military links with Taiwan, and stop disturbing the peaceful development of cross Strait relations, so as to prevent further damage to the Sino-U.S. relations and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.     China reserved the right for taking further measures, he noted.     The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC),China's top legislature, and the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, on Saturday also express strong indignation over the U.S. arms sale plan.     The foreign affairs committee of the NPC Standing Committee and that of the CPPCC National Committee each issued a statement, stressing that people of all walks of life in China were firmly opposed to the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.     "We firmly support our government's solemn stances over this issue," the statements said.     The statements said the cross Strait relations have recently witnessed sound momentum, which accords with the interests of both Chinese and U.S. peoples. The U.S. proposed arms sale to Taiwan actually was a move disturbing the improvement of the cross Strait relations.     The statements called for the United States to immediately correct its wrongdoing, and refrain from any further moves that will damage the Sino-U.S. relations and the world peace.     China's Defense Ministry also issued a statement Saturday, condemning the U.S. move.     Defense Ministry spokesman Hu Changming said the U.S. decision has ruined the good atmosphere of cooperation that had existed between the two armed forces over recent years.     The statement also warned China reserves the right of making further reactions.

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Higos, the 17th this year, will drop heavy rain on parts of south China's Guangdong and Hainan provinces over the next two days, the National Meteorological Observatory said on Thursday.     The office advised everyone in those regions to prepare for therain, as well as lightning storms and gale-force winds.     Tourists in coastal cities of the island province of Hainan, such as Sanya and Bo'ao, have been advised to avoid offshore activities over the next three days.     Higos was centered about 700 km southeast of Zhuhai, Guangdong,as of 5 p.m. on Thursday, and it was moving north-west at 20 km per hour. Tourists stay at the beach in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, on Oct. 2, 2008. Tropical storm Higos, the 17th this year, is moving towards south China's island province of Hainan, the provincial meteorological station said on Thursday, affecting the ongoing National Day holidays.    The storm is gaining momentum as it nears eastern Hainan and the mid-west regions of Guangdong, according to the national observatory.     Higos, which formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, comes on the heels of storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which together killed some 20 people in China

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank on Friday said it will continue international cooperation to tackle the global financial crisis and maintain market stability.     The pledge came two days after the People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced an interest rate cut in a co-ordinated global move to revive solvency in the international financial system.     The PBOC on Wednesday cut the benchmark lending and deposit rates by 0.27 percentage points and the reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points amid growing fears of a slowing economy and falling equities market.     "The PBOC will continue close contacts and cooperation with counterparts and international financial organizations to jointly maintain stability of global financial market," PBOC spokesman Li Chao told Xinhua.     The PBOC would closely watch the developments and effects of the crisis and take timely and flexibly measures according to changes in the domestic and international situations to guard against financial risks, Li said.     The global economic slowdown reduced demand for Chinese exports and inevitably affected China's economy, he said.     The central bank was fully confident and capable of dealing with the crisis and maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth.     "China has a huge domestic market and the liquidity is abundant," he said. "As long as we take strong measures to boost domestic demand, the economy has big potential for sustainable growth."     A PBOC statement on the third-quarter meeting of its monetary policy committee said it would take flexible and prudent macro-economic control measures to boost economic growth.     The PBOC was not optimistic in its global economic outlook as intensifying fluctuations in the financial markets had affected the real economy.     It said it would boost coordination between monetary policies and fiscal, industry, export and financial regulation policies to help transform economic growth mode and boost domestic demand to balance international payments.

BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here on Thursday with ex-French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and urged the French government to work with China to put bilateral relations on a healthy and stable track.     Wen said France was the first Western power to forge diplomatic relations with China, and also the first European Union (EU) member state to set up a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.     China valued its friendship with France, which was fostered by leaders of several generations from both nations and by the two peoples, Wen said. He hoped France would work with China to push forward the healthy and stable growth of bilateral ties in line with the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.     He clarified the truth behind violent crimes in Lhasa and other places, and stated China's stance on this issue. BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday urged Hainan Province, China's largest special economic zone (SEZ), to further carry out reform and opening up as it embraces its 20th anniversary.     The province should "beef up reforms and make efforts to achieve breakthroughs in key fields", said Li during his inspection tour to the island province from Thursday to Sunday.     He suggested that the province should build itself into a shipping hub and center of logistics and export-oriented processing facing southeast Asia. BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's chief quality supervisor Li Changjiang stepped down Monday afternoon with the approval of the State Council after tainted dairy products sickened tens of thousands of infants and killed three.     Wang Yong, former deputy secretary-general of the State Council, replaced him as the director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ).     Li was the highest ranking official brought down so far by the dairy product contamination scandal.     Across the country, about 13,000 babies remain in hospital after falling ill from melamine-tainted milk powder, and nearly 40,000 others were also sickened but had been cured, according to the Ministry of Health on Sunday.     Wu Xianguo, the Communist Party chief of Shijiazhuang City, the epicenter of the national dairy industry tremor in northern Hebei Province, was also sacked on Monday.     Before Wu, Mayor Ji Chuntang and Vice Mayor Zhang Fawang as well as three other responsible city officials were sacked after locally-based Sanlu Group became the first dairy producer under the spotlight in the scandal.     The latest government personnel reshuffle, together with the resignation of Shanxi governor Meng Xuenong following a deadly landslide triggered by the collapse of an illegal mining dump, sent a strong signal of the central government's resolution to hold relevant officials accountable for severe production and quality incidents, said professor Wang Wei of the National School of Administration.     "Such a system is especially crucial to the building of a service-oriented government as the public, impressed with the Olympic efficiency of the governments at various levels, expect officials to retain quick-response and effective," Wang said.     Under the Civil Servants Law effective as of 2005 and the State Council Regulations on the Punishment of Civil Servants of Administrative Organs enacted last April, heads of administrative organs who fail to fulfill their duties and cause avoidable severe accidents will face removal and severer punishment.     A State Council decision released on Monday defined the Sanlu milk powder issue as a "sever food safety incident".     Wu, who doubled as member of the Standing Committee of the Hebei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, was removed for delaying the reporting of the issue to higher authorities and incompetence in the disposition.     Li resigned taking the blame for supervision default.     Professor Wang found Li's resignation "no wonder". "With tightened and more efficient supervision, pathogenic dairy products would find no way to get out of the production lines," he said.     A combined result from purposeful cover-up of the producer and supervision default, the contamination scandal didn't emerge until Autumn.     Wang Yuanping from Taishun City of Zhejiang reportedly lodged a complaint to Sanlu in May, suspecting that his 13-year-old daughter developed kidney stone after drinking its milk powder.

MIANYANG, Sichuan Province, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday visited with some earthquake survivors who had resettled in public camps in Sichuan Province's Mianyang City.     For refugees staying in low-lying lands in the southwest Chinese province, they were also at threat from the huge "quake lakes" bursting their banks.     The 8.0-magnitude tremor on May 12, which had claimed at least 69,134 lives to date, had created the threatening 200 million cubic meter Tangjiashan quake lake which overlooks Mianyang, about 70 meters above the city.     The local government is currently relocating more than 210,000 people to safer grounds.     In his third visit to the province since the quake, Wen said ina camp harboring hundreds of the quake homeless, "I hope you would understand our efforts to resettle you away from your home to a relatively safe place because the swelling quake lake is so dangerous."     "Yes, we understand," the locals replied. "How long do we have to stay here and when shall we go back home?"     "I think you might go (home) after the drainage," he said.     "Could I hug you?" the boy said after his question. Wen hugged him immediately.     At a temporary retirement home in the camp, Wen greeted 100-year-old Chen Jiazhen. "You would work hard," the centurion told Wen. "Of course, I will," the premier responded with sincerity.     Seeing an old man writing a letter of gratitude to the armed forces rescuers and volunteers, Wen said he was also willing to write some words.     "Respect and strength," he wrote on the reverse side of the old man's letter.
