COPENHAGEN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The impressive celebrations on Oct. 1 has testified that China is now a very important country in the world and holds a strong position globally, a European expert on China said.     The celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China "were very impressive," Kjeld Erik Broedsgaard, professor and director of the Asia Research Center in Copenhagen Business School, told Xinhua in a recent interview.     "I think China now is in a stronger position globally than it was in any times since 1949. The celebrations really testify that this is the case," said Broedsgaard, who has been closely following the development of China for more than 30 years.     China's economic, political and cultural influence has been on the rise in recent years, said Broedsgaard, who has written and edited 18 books and monographs on modern China and East Asian affairs.     Describing China as being at the "forefront in terms of economic development," the Danish professor said China's role is "critical" in tackling the global financial crisis.     On China's political influence, he said China has taken part in "a variety of multilateral for a" in addition to international organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.     The Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 also showed China's increasing significance, he observed.     Culturally, "China is also in a position where soft power is increasing," said Broedsgaard, who is a member of the Advisory Committee of the EU-China Academic Network and the Sino-Danish Joint Committee for Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation.     Many people are interested in the Chinese tradition and culture, while more and more people are studying the Chinese language, he said, taking South Korea as an instance.     There are more people in South Korea studying Chinese than English, he explained.     Confucius institutes have been established in many countries, he said, adding that there is a Confucius Business Institute in Copenhagen.     As for the problems that China faces, Broedsgaard said that "there are always problems when a country rises."     But he said it is useful to remember history and put things in a historical perspective, adding that it is very important to remember that this is the "re-emergence" of China, which was a strong and important country in the past.     To ease the concerns of other countries, China has to relate to its partners and major powers and reassure them that it is a win-win situation in which "I get stronger, but you also get benefit," he said.     Broedsgaard also commented on the party building of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was a focus of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee held in Beijing from Sept. 15 to Sept. 18.     "The whole issue of party building is important because the quality of leadership is important," he said, adding that the failure of the Soviet Union in the 1990s was part of "a question of the quality of leadership."     The CPC has been able to reform, renew and revitalize itself, he said.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tire producers, who are facing proposed sanctionative tariffs from the U.S. authorities, appeal for "fair ruling" from the U.S. government, a Chinese tire industry representatives told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday.     "The proposed sanction against Chinese tire export to the U.S. market will cause a lose-lose situation on both countries," said Mary Xu, deputy secretary general of the China Rubber Industry Association and the leading member of a Chinese tire producers delegation in Washington.     "We have filed much evidence demonstrating that Chinese tire imports do not injure the U.S. tire industry. The restriction of the Chinese tires cannot solve any problem faced by the U.S. tire industry, and further would hurt U.S. tire distributors and consumers," the delegation said in a letter to the U.S. President Barack Obama before a government hearing on this issue on Friday.     The U.S. Steelworkers union, which represents workers at major U.S. tire manufacturers, filed a petition against China earlier this year for import relief and won a favorable ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).     The panel recommended Obama impose a 55 percent tariff on the Chinese tire imports which would be reduced to 45 percent in the second year and 35 percent in the third before being removed.     The steelworkers asked for protection under Section 421 of U.S. trade law, which only requires petitioners to show that imports from China have disrupted the U.S. market.     "Chinese tires are welcomed by the American consumers who believe that our products have good cost performance," Xu said. "Chinese tires are relatively lower ended and mainly for the replacement of tires. The U.S. tire makers do not produce these types of tires. So our tires are complementary, not competitive to the U.S. products."     Xu said that the tariffs will hurt the American consumers and cause job loss as well.     "This case will influence about 100,000 U.S. employees across the country, including tire sellers, distributors, transporters and logistic companies. More than 25,000 American workers may lose their jobs if the sanction is implemented," Xu said.     "And about 100,000 Chinese workers from 20 tire producers will be influenced by the case," she added.     The ITC said it submitted its investigation report to President Obama and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Ron Kirk last month.     The USTR hearing would be the final event in the investigation before Obama rules on the ITC recommendation.     The USTR will submit its remedy recommendation to Obama by September 2. He is required to make a decision within 15 days after receiving it.     Xu said that the tariffs proposal are widely opposed by the U.S. consumers and tire distributors.     In a letter to President Obama, the American Tire Industry Association (TIA) opposed petition to limit imports of Chinese-made tires and said that it will hurt the U.S. economy and consumers.     This case also aroused closely watch of trade protectionism since it is seen as a test case for the Obama administration's trade policy.     The president's decision will tell the world if he believes his own rhetoric about the dangers of protectionism in a weak global economy, The Wall Street Journal said in a report Tuesday.     "Chinese tires have fairly traded in the U.S. for years. I think limiting trade in fairly traded goods is protectionism. It would contradict recent pledges by the United States to avoid protectionism and to work in cooperation with China to promote trade," said Xu.     "We cannot predict the result of the case right now," Xu said. "What we expect is a fair ruling from the U.S. government."

BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- China issued alert on 8 p.m. Saturday for flood in the country's Hunan and Jiangxi provinces which left dozens people dead or missing and displaced hundreds of thousands, and sent relief groups to the two provinces.     As of 4 p.m. of Saturday, five people were killed, 10 were missing and about 64,000 were relocated by the widespread heavy rain in Hunan since July 23, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. We are working very hard for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and we are totally against nuclear proliferation...This issue, the nuclear issue, should be solved by peaceful means through diplomatic negotiation," Yang said.     Yang made the remark before he entered the venue for the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), a top security forum in Asia which is held in the Thai southern island of Phuket on Thursday. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's home prices continued to rise in July as bank loans surged and the country's economy improved.     Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized Chinese cities rose 1 percent in July from a year earlier, according to a joint statement issued Monday by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Bureau of Statistics. The prices climbed 0.9 percent from June, which saw a 0.8 percent gain over May.     Prices of new homes in the listed cities rose 0.3 percent year on year in July, and 1.1 percent from June. New home prices increased in 43 cities, including eastern Ningbo City and northwestern Yinchuan City, which saw growth rates of 6.4 percent and 5.4 percent respectively. Graphics shows China's housing sales price in July increased 1.0 percent year-on-year in 70 large and medium-sized cities, according to the State Bureau of Statistics on Aug. 10, 2009.     Prices fell in 26 cities. The northern city of Shijiazhuang and southern city of Shenzhen witnessed price drops of 5.5 percent and 4.6 percent in July year on year.     Second-hand homes in the 70 cities rose 3 percent in July from the same period last year and 0.9 percent from June.     In the first seven months, property investment hit 1.77 trillion yuan (259.44 billion U.S. dollars), up 11.6 percent year on year. The rise was1.7 percentage points higher than the first six months.     Over the same period, the floor area of property sold stood at 417.55 million square meters, up 37.1 percent year on year. The value of property sales jumped 60.4 percent to 1.96 trillion yuan.     Chinese banks lent a record 7.37 trillion yuan of yuan-dominated loans in the first half, exceeding the annual target of 5 trillion yuan.     The country's central bank announced earlier this month that new loans to home buyers in the first half rose by 263.3 billion yuan year on year to 479.3 billion yuan, boosted by an improving property market performance.     New credit for property developers increased by 221 billion yuan year on year to 403.9 billion yuan, said the central bank.     Premier Wen Jiabao reaffirmed over the weekend that the government's relaxed monetary policy would continue.

FRANKFURT, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- How could the Chinese economy witness rapid growth for over 30 years in a row? How could its population of 1.3 billion have living standards improved sustainably? The answer is what observers across the world are dubbing the "China miracle".     On Wednesday, politicians and economists attending the "International Economists Forum" at the interval of the Frankfurt Book Fair gave their own interpretations on the "China miracle".     Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who has long been supporting a smooth expansion of Sino-German and Sino-European relations, said Europe should regard China as a partner instead of a rival.     Europe should continue to push strategic relations between China and the European Union (EU), which would benefit both sides, said Schroeder, who visited China almost every year during his period in power.     Edmund Strother Phelps, an American economist and the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, stressed the significance of innovation and entrepreneurship in boosting the economic development in China.     Phelps also proposed that the Chinese government provide more conditions for encouraging innovation.     Justin Yifu Lin, senior vice president of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank, said China adopted a pragmatic, dual-track approach in the reform process, by providing transitory protection to non-viable firms in old priority sectors and liberalizing the entry to the sectors that are consistent with China's comparative advantages.     "Continuous innovation of technology and upgrading of industries are the driving forces of modern economic growth for China," Lin added.     Professor Athar Hussain, director of Asia Research Center at the London School of Economics and Political Science, is well acquainted with China through his work as a foreign expert there in 1960s.     In his lecture, Hussain praised China's achievements. He also pointed out the challenges ahead for China in its modernization drive.     Chen Ping, a professor from China's Fudan University, noted that orthodox economic architectures failed to explain the success and experience of China.     China's burgeoning growth and unprecedented development model had contributed to the human history at large, he added.
