BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's per capita gross domestic product exceeded 10,000 U.S. dollars for the first time last year after a strong economic recovery, a local statistics official said Thursday.The GDP in the Chinese capital grew 10.1 percent to 1.187 trillion yuan (137.8 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, according to the Beijing Bureau of Statistics.The per capita GDP was 68,788 yuan (10,070 U.S. dollars) as the city had 17.55 million permanent residents at the end of 2009."The breakthrough is a milestone for Beijing," said Yu Xiuqin, the bureau's deputy director. BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- China promulgated a regulation Monday requiring meteorological authorities to conduct research on meteorological disasters, in an effort to reduce the damage from natural disasters like sand storms, blizzards, droughts, typhoons and icy weather.The Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, the Cabinet, said Tuesday in a statement the regulation is designed to better protect people's lives and properties.The regulation, which takes effect April 1, requires meteorological authorities above the county level to conduct research on the frequency, intensity, and impact of meteorological disasters, and to set up a database to better evaluate risks.Schools are asked to teach students how to protect themselves and rescue others during natural disasters under the guidance of educational or meteorological authorities.The regulation also specifies the media's role in the event of meteorological disasters.Media organizations are responsible for the release of disaster warnings and alerts given by the local meteorological centers, the regulation says.Media organizations that fail in their responsibilities, release false information, or release alerts without authorization face fines of up to 50,000 yuan (about 7,322 U.S. dollars), according to the regulation.Media groups must cover the occurrence and development of disasters and emergency situations "timely and correctly", it reads.China is one of the countries most susceptible to natural disasters and 70 percent of disasters occurring in China are meteorological ones, according to the statement.

BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign-funded enterprises in China exported 494.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products in 2009.A document posted on the website of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said the figure made up 69.3 percent of the country's total exports of such products in the past year.Exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products by privately-owned enterprises totalled 106.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, down 8.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the document.State-owned enterprises only exported 92.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products, accounting for 12.9 percent of the country's total machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.The GAC document also said the majority of the country's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products fell into the category of processing and assembling trade.China's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products in the category of processing and assembling trade totalled 466.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, making up 65.4 percent of the country's total exports of such products.The country exported 713.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year, down 13.4 percent year-on-year.
