BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China will work with Belgium to improve political trust and substantial cooperation to make new progress in bilateral ties, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday.     During talks with Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy, Xi put forward a four-point proposal to cement bilateral ties:     -- To maintain high-level contacts and political dialogues. China welcomes King Albert II to participate in the 2010 Shanghai Expo and hopes the governments, parliaments and political parties of the two countries to increase exchanges for more understanding and trust;     -- To consider the core interests and concerns of each other. URUMQI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Diplomatic envoys from 26 countries and regions in China began a five-day visit to northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Monday, about a month after the deadly riot in the regional capital of Urumqi.     At the invitation of the autonomous regional government, they are expected to -- through the visit -- acquire a better understanding of Xinjiang's development over the past several decades in various respects, including its politics, economy, ethnic and religious policies, preservation of cultural relics and the livelihood of local residents. "Violence is not allowed in any sovereignty and law-ruled nation." 

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese leaders including President Hu Jintao on Saturday visited an exhibition showcasing the achievements New China has made in the past six decades.     Former President Jiang Zemin, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, and other senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang also visited the show. NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Monday for a UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25.     President Hu will attend a UN climate change summit in New York on Tuesday, address the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly Wednesday, and participate in a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament on Thursday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry officials.     In a note to heads of state and government regarding the summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said "the objective of the Summit on Climate Change, which I am convening on Sept. 22, is to mobilize the political will and vision needed to reach an ambitious agreed outcome based on science at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen." PYONGYANG, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), met with Dai Bingguo, Chinese state councilor and special envoy of Chinese President Hu Jintao, here Thursday to discuss relations between their two countries.     Kim asked Dai to convey his greetings to his Chinese counterpart, Wu Bangguo, and offered congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Kim expressed his wish that the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, will continue the country's modernization drive.     Kim reiterated that it is the unshakable stand of the Worker's Party of Korea and the DPRK government to consolidate and further promote the traditional DPRK-China friendship.     He said the DPRK side would work with the Chinese side to push forward DPRK-China relations.     Dai conveyed Wu Bangguo's greetings, saying the Chinese government and the Chinese people treasured the friendship with the DPRK, and would strengthen the exchange and cooperation with the DPRK side to write together a new chapter of the friendship.     This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and has been named the Year of China-DPRK Friendship.     After the meeting, Dai and Kim watched the debut of the opera, "The Dream of the Red Chamber" at the Pyongyang Grand Theater. The opera, based on a Chinese classic, was staged first in the 1960s under the initiative and instruction of late DPRK president Kim IlSung.     The opera has been renovated and re-staged as a major event in the Year of China-DPRK Friendship. DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il has taken a strong interest in its development and has watched a rehearsal.

XINING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China will put environmental concerns as top priority in tackling ways to exploit combustible ice, a kind of natural gas hydrate, in the permanent tundra in its northwest plateau region, said a combustible ice project leader.     "We do not need to drill very deep to get the flammable frozen compound from tundra here in Muli Prefecture in Qinghai Province. However, as the sample is taken out, methane gas is easily released into the atmosphere," said Wen Huaijun, chief engineer of the combustible ice project in Qinghai.     He said the project team under the China National Administration of Coal Geology is carrying out research to guarantee that the exploitation of the frozen natural gas does not cause environmental problems.     Combustible ice is regarded as a potential source of alternative energy to coal and oil. One cubic meter of combustible ice can release 164 cubic meters of natural gas.     The Ministry of Land Resources said on Friday that the prospective volume of the natural gas hydrate in the country's frozen earth regions is estimated to reach 35 billion tonnes of oil equivalent.     China announced the first discovery of the resource under the bed of the South China Sea in May 2007.     Wen said the environmental threats from the use of the resource even in a land-based region is enormous, because it releases carbon dioxide or methane into the atmosphere.     "The plateau region is very sensitive to environmental changes. The biological conditions here are vulnerable," he said.     Combustible ice usually exists in seabed or tundra areas (two mediums having the strong pressure and low temperature necessary to its stability). It can be lit up like solid ethanol, which is why it has the name "combustible ice."     Wen said the combustible ice research project has been carried in Muli Prefecture, 4,100 meters above sea level, since 2004.     "It still takes time and a huge amount of research investment to realize the dream of exploiting the resource, while ensuring the environment," he said.     Wang Jianbin, deputy director of the Qinghai Bureau of Land Resources, said at the present stage, the project focus is still to ascertain locations of the deposit, and carry out a feasibility study on its exploitation.
