"To befriend the media is to befriend the audience."     About 30,000 reporters are expected to cover the Games, the most in Olympic history, which means the number in the audience could be the highest ever too.     "It is through the media that the audience across the world are learning about the Olympics, China and Beijing," the newspaper said. And the BIMC staff have received and processed more than 200 requests for interviews, half from foreign media.     Although worries about free news reporting are lingering, covering news in China has undergone notable changes.     A regulation on reporting activities in China by foreign media during the Games and the preparatory period has, since January last year, lifted several rules over foreign reporters. They no longer need approval from the local government's foreign affairs department but only agreement from the people or organizations to be interviewed. In April last year, the Chinese government issued a regulation asking administrations to publicize information that the public should learn about. The first news about the earthquake came minutes after tremors were felt while the death toll, which used to be a taboo in disaster news reporting, was announced and updated daily until now. A day later foreign correspondents were reporting news on the earthquake ruins, and continued to do so.     The country faced criticism for not allowing any foreign media to enter Tibet immediately after the Lhasa violence on March 14, although reporters already there were allowed to continue to report until their permits ran out. Chinese news stories were publicized straight after the incident happened in the Tibetan city, including TV footage about violent attacks on the street. This surprised Chinese audiences who have become used to a diet of positive news.     As the International Olympic Committee said in its report when choosing Beijing to host the 2008 Olympic Games, the Games would leave a unique legacy to China and to sport. There are reasons to believe that part of the legacy will be a country opening wider to the world.

BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday that President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to Japan would have a profound impact on bilateral strategic and reciprocal relations.     "President Hu's trip is a great event in Sino-Japanese relations in the new period," Xi told visiting Yoshinobu Ishikawa, governor of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan.     Xi said this trip would promote mutual understanding and friendship as well as substantial cooperation between the two countries.     He expected the two countries to seize the chance to become good neighbors and partners featuring peaceful existence, long-term friendship, reciprocal cooperation and common prosperity. BEIJING, Sept.1 (Xinhua) -- China's securities watchdog on Monday required fund companies to make their information release more transparent and rolled out a draft regulation on brokers, its latest moves to boost the healthy development of the country's stock market.     The information of stock-oriented funds, such as their periodic results, would be regularly publicized on the website of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, according to a standard format in the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL), starting from Jan. 1 next year, the CSRC said in a statement on Monday night.     "The move was to further improve the quality of information release by fund companies," said the CSRC.     The new rule was expected to help third-party agencies to appraise and supervise the management of fund companies. Previously it was difficult for a third party to collect and analyze the first-hand information of funds, which was not available to all.     Meanwhile, the CSRC said a new regulation on securities brokers would prohibit them from surpassing their authority by manipulating customers' accounts or providing investment counseling.     The dealers would also be forbidden to "offer or spread false, misleading information", or "tempt customers to make unnecessary deals," said the CSRC. Nor could they make agreements on sharing investment proceeds with customers, or promise gains or compensation for losses.     "It was aimed at protecting the legal interests of fund investors and ward off risks caused by ill regulation of securities dealers," said the CSRC in a separate statement.     The watchdog's actions were part of China's recent efforts to straighten out the stock market order and lay a sound foundation for a long-term development.     The CSRC announced earlier this month it would raise the refinancing threshold for listed companies, saying the dividend they pay to shareholders in the recent three years should be no less than 30 percent of its distributed profits, compared with the previous set line of 20 percent.     Refinancing plans of listed companies had led to share price declines and complaints in China as liquidity concerns loomed over the stock market. Investors also blamed their losses on insider trading and opacity of fund companies.     Last week, a draft amendment to the Criminal Law was submitted to China's top legislature, stating that employees of financial institutes will face criminal prosecution for insider trading. Currently there were no relevant provisions in the Criminal Law.     China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index has shed more than 60 percent from its peak in mid October last year.     In the first half, 364 funds in the country incurred a record loss of 1.08 trillion yuan (about 154 billion U.S. dollars), more than 90 percent coming from stock-oriented or hybrid funds, according to statistics from the TX Investment Consulting Co..

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council published on Friday guidelines on post-quake reconstruction, emphasizing house repair and building work.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, stressed priority for repairing and building houses for people whose homes were destroyed during the May 12 tremor.     "Check for repairable buildings and fix them as soon as possible; scientifically choose sites, economically use land and set down reasonable quake-resistant levels for building new houses," the guidelines said.     Areas suitable for living must be marked off based on scientific standards and evaluations on geology and natural resources. Meanwhile, the government will see to the reasonable distribution regarding population, industry and productivity, according to the guidelines.
