BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's operational high-speed railways have exceeded 3,300 kilometers, leading the world in both length and technologies, the Ministry of Railways said on its official website Thursday.Last year China finished two high-speed railways between Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi'an, with an operating speed of 350 km/h. Before that, China had built high-speed railways between some of its major cities, including Beijing-Tianjin, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan, Qingdao-Jinan, Hefei-Wuhan and Hefei-Nanjing.A number of new high-speed railways are being built and will be finished in the coming few years, of which the Beijing-Shanghai line has a length of 1,318 km and a designed travel speed of 350 km/h. Construction of the line started in April 2008 and would finish in around five years. BEIJING, March. 4 (Xinhua) -- Anti-corruption authorities of the Chinese government and the Communist Party of China (CPC) have been ordered to make sweeping investigations of all major state-funded construction projects begun since 2008.The order was issued at a conference on Thursday on cleaning up the construction sector in 2010.The investigations would cover the bidding and tendering processes, land use rights, construction quality and transparency of the entire process, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the CPC's anti-graft body, at the meeting.He, also head of the national team to stop corruption in construction projects, said 2010 would be a crucial year in stepping up the fight against corruption and misconduct in the construction sector.He warned anti-corruption authorities to take the investigations seriously."Those who are merely going through the motions will be held accountable," He said, according to a statement issued after the conference.The fight against corruption and misconduct in the construction sector would contribute to steady and relatively fast economic growth, he said.Since the initiation of a nationwide two-year campaign against the corruption and misconduct in construction sector in July last year, the country's discipline inspection authorities had investigated 5,803 cases linked to the construction sector, and had penalized 3,374 people, said the statement.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A cold front is expected to sweep the northern part of China over the next three days, bringing strong wind and a temperature drop, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said Sunday.Small to moderate snow or sleet is forecast in the northern and southwestern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, western Tibet Autonomous Region and the northeastern part of China.The cold front will cause a temperature drop of four to six degrees Celsius since Feb. 15 in central and eastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, north China and northeastern China.The central and the eastern part of China will see a temperature drop of three to five degrees Celsius.Areas in Hunan and Guizhou provinces would expect freezing rain over the following three days.The CMA also said the blizzard condition which had stricken eastern Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces had eased to small to moderate snow or sleet.The National Meteorological Center had cleared the blizzard warning by 6 p.m. Sunday, 24 hours after the issuance, the CMA said.

BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Profits in China's non-ferrous metal industry declined in 2009 despite rising output due to low prices, according to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).Output of 10 kinds of non-ferrous metals, including copper, alumina, zinc and lead, increased 5.8 percent in the country from a year earlier to 26.81 million tonnes last year.However, combined profit of 70 major enterprises in the sector totaled 17.6 billion yuan (2.58 billion U.S. dollars), down 1.46 percent year on year, the MIIT said.Although the industry maintained a good development momentum in 2009, many challenges remained, including the problems of excess capacity and outdated production capacity.The MIIT would focus more on speeding up the elimination of backward production capacities in the industry this year and checking an excessive growth in expansion of non-ferrous metal smelting capacities.

CHONGQING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chongqing Higher People's court on Monday upheld the convictions of 54 members of two mafia-like gangs, amid a massive crackdown on organized crime in the southwestern Chinese city.In the second trial at the court, Wang Tianlun, leader of a 23-member gang, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for organizing and instigating gang-related crimes, forcing others to trade and assault.Wang had controlled a local market since 1995, using violence and other criminal means to force vendors to sell meat injected with water, the court said.Tang Youbin, a gang member, was also sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on similar charges. Another 21 members received life imprisonment and jail terms ranging from one to 20 years.In a separate case, Li Qiang, a former municipal lawmaker, was sentenced to 20 years in jail for seven crimes including organizing a 31-member criminal gang, disturbing public order, disturbing traffic order, illegal business, bribery and hiding accounting documents.Li Qiang based his gang around the company he founded in 1996, Chongqing Yuqiang Group Co. Ltd. To boost his company's share of the Chongqing transportation market, Li organized gang members to disturb the traffic order and cause traffic jams. More than 55 buses were illegally put into use in the city, with the illegal business generating an estimated 18.4 million yuan (2.7 million U.S. dollars).Of the other 30 members of the gang, 25 received sentences ranging from one to 18 years.The members of the two gangs were put on trial in December last year at the Chongqing No. 5 Intermediate People's Court.
