HELSINKI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland on Thursday agreed to push for closer economic cooperation to tackle the ongoing global financial crisis.     Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang unveiled broad measures to work together with Finland to fight the global financial crisis after meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. Li and Vanhanen joined a signing ceremony of several government and business agreements between the two sides, under which Li said China would purchase Finland's advanced environment-friendly technologies.     China would also send a large group of entrepreneurs to Finland within two weeks to make major purchases of Finnish goods, according to Li. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (1st R) holds talks with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen in Helsinki, June 25, 2009    The two governments also planned to hold talks in August on reducing double-taxing to facilitate bilateral trade and investment activities.     Li said these measures were major fruits of his visit to Finland, adding that the measures reflected the shared political will between China and Finland to push for closer cooperation in tackling the financial crisis and opposing protectionism.     Vanhanen said that the Finnish government and the Finnish people, battered by the ongoing financial crisis, were looking forward to seeing the large group of Chinese entrepreneurs in Finland.     The Finnish leader stressed that the Sino-Finnish relations had always been solid and strong, adding that the two sides were getting increasingly closer as they took effective measures to deepen bilateral cooperation in all fields.     Vanhanen said the 2010 World Expo to be held in Shanghai, China was a good opportunity for promoting the Sino-Finnish relations, and that Finnish companies would actively participate in the event.     He promised that Finland would continue to play a constructive role in promoting China-EU relations and pushing for the lifting of an EU arms sales ban on China as soon as possible.     Vanhanen reiterated that the Finnish government would firmly adhere to the one-China policy.     During their talks, Li highlighted several key points in developing the Sino-Finnish relations.     He said China and Finland should attach strategic importance to their relations, further expand mutually beneficial economic cooperation, and create new areas for cooperation in culture and education. 

UNITED NATIONS, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The international community should give a more balanced assessment of the political progress Myanmar has made and treat it with less arrogance and prejudice, a senior Chinese diplomat said here Monday.     Liu Zhenmin, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, told an open meeting of the Security Council that "it has been unfair to turn a blind eye to the progress Myanmar has made, or instead, always be picky at its government."     Liu said the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been actively conducted good offices in Myanmar as mandated by the General Assembly in recent years.     "His unremitting efforts and the positive outcome thereby achieved deserve an objective and fair assessment by the international community," he said.     Ban briefed the 15 members of the Security Council at the meeting on his latest visit to the south-eastern Asian country on July 3-4, the second in just over a year. China is opposed to putting the Myanmar question on the UN Security Council agenda and is against isolating and sanctioning against the country, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Liu Zhenmin said here on Monday, stressing the events that happened inside Myanmar were its internal affairsDuring his visit, Ban met with Senior-General Than Shwe, Myanmar's head of state, and people from other political parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD), but was under pressure from some media and certain countries due to his failure to meet with NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.     Liu voiced China's support to Ban and highly appreciated his recent visit, calling the visit "positive and full of significance."     "Whether or not he met with Aung San Suu Kyi should not be used as a criterion to measure the success of the visit," he said.     Also on Monday, Myanmar's UN Ambassador U Than Swe told the Security Council that his government regretted its inability to arrange the meeting as the special court has its independent jurisdiction over the matter.     "Aung San Suu Kyi was unfortunately involved in the legal proceed. In order to maintain the justice of judicial process, the Myanmar government did not arrange the bilateral meeting. This is totally understandable. The UN should respect the jurisdiction of its member state," Liu said.     He said China has time and again stressed that the secretary-general's good offices are a process and his visit is a part of the efforts.     Ban had in-depth talks with top leaders of Myanmar, directly conveyed to them the concern of the international community and enhanced mutual trust between Myanmar and the UN, Liu said.     "This will play an important role in encouraging the Myanmar side to maintain the current momentum and promote the democratic process according to the established plans," Liu said.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the U.S. mortgage giant company was found dead as a result of an apparent suicide incident, said police on Wednesday. According to police, David Kellermann, the Freddie Mac's acting chief financial officer and senior vice president, was found hanging himself at the basement of his house in Vienna, Virginia, early in the morning. Quoted by U.S. local media, neighbors said that Kellermann, who worked for Freddie Mac for the past 16 years, lost an amount of weight after he took the new job.     Despite persuasion by neighbors that he should quit his job to release the pressure, Kellermann insisted that he would stay and help the company through its problems.     After Kellermann's death, John Koskinen, the company's interim chief executive, said in a statement that Kellermann is "a man of great talents," and "his extraordinary work ethic and integrity inspired all who worked with him."     Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a statement "our deepest sympathies are with his family and his colleagues at Freddie Mac during this difficult time."     According to a report from the New York Times, Kellermann had received a bonus of about 800,000 dollars since the government take-over, which, as a part of totaled 210 million dollars for executives at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, has prompted scrutiny from lawmakers who have questioned bonuses for executives of firms receiving government bailouts.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday met with President of the Socialist International(SI) George Papandreou on promoting the world's sustainable development.     Papandreou was leading a 15-member delegation to Beijing for a sustainable growth seminar co-sponsored by the Communist Party of China(CPC) and the SI.     Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, reviewed the increasing exchanges since the CPC and the SI started their exchanges in 1982.     "Jointly holding a seminar on sustainable growth signifies a positive step for both sides to deepen strategic dialogue," Li said.     The seminar, scheduled for Friday, will address how to work together to deal with climate change and other environmental challenges.     Li briefed Papandreou on the country's efforts to tackle the international financial crisis and seek sustainable development.     Li said the CPC valued the ties with the SI and its member parties and called for increased cooperation and deeper dialogue.     Papandreou said the Socialist International would like to seek more dialogue and cooperation with the CPC to promote sustainable development worldwide. XI'AN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged the country's college students to find grassroots jobs in less developed regions as the economic downturn increases pressures in employment market.     Visiting Xi'an, capital of central Shaanxi Province, from Friday to Sunday, Wen said employment was one of the government's priorities for the sake of the country's economy and for the future of individuals.     "College students, laid-off workers and migrant workers waiting for jobs are my biggest concern," Wen told job hunters at an employment center.     He encouraged graduates from universities and colleges to find work in grassroots regions, and called on employers to create more jobs.     Since the second half of last year, the government has implemented a series of policies to create jobs. The State Council, or Cabinet, also decided to give living allowances to graduates who went to the central and western regions for internships.     Everyone should have a resolute belief that they should try their best no matter what their job was, Wen told students at Xi'an Jiaotong University. BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Monday called on local governments and government agencies to improve production safety and crack down on illegal practices.     The number of accidents and casualties had fallen this year, Zhang said in a teleconference aimed to improve production safety.     However, some industries still had potential dangers, he said.     Zhang urged authorities to enhance work safety supervision and remove hidden dangers at work places to avoid accidents.     Any illegalities, especially in major industries such as coal mining, construction, and fireworks production, must be eliminated.

BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military authorities pledged Sunday to tighten supervision on senior and middle ranking officers, through strict punishment in cases of breach of duty and regular inspection of their work.     The military will adopt a strict system to investigate and punish senior officers for breaching duty or making mistakes, said a circular issued by the Central Military Commission (CMC) on Sunday.     The document, approved by CMC Chairman Hu Jintao, said it will also introduce a system of accountability by regular inspection on the work of officers at army corps level.     Military units higher than regiment level of the People's Liberation Army must review the work of their commanding officers at least once a year, it added.     Commanding officers from regiment to army corps levels are usually regarded as middle and senior ranking PLA officers.     It will tighten inspection on senior officers to see whether they strictly follow the military disciplines and show loyalty to the Communist Party of China.     The circular called on the officers to keep a communist nature. "In the face of a complicated ideological situation, senior military officers must stick to their faith and keep a firm political stance," it said.     They should devote themselves to building up the country's military capacity to win local wars in the information age, it said.     The document said that the supervision and inspection will focus on any examples of extravagance and waste by military officers.

RAMALLAH, June 23, (Xinhua) -- With more than 30 years of involvement in the work related to the Middle East issue, China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Tuesday that he'll employ his personal experience on the region to help fulfill his mission.     Wu arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday, starting the second leg of his first regional tour as China's new special envoy.     Upon his arrival, Wu told Xinhua that Chinese and Palestinian peoples have a traditional friendship, China has been long supporting the righteous Palestinian cause, with the positive sign emerged recently on the peace issue, China, along with the international community, is concerning on how to revive the peace process and push forward the process toward a final solution.     With this concern, Wu said the aim of his trip is to know the attitude and response of all sides involved in the peace process on the newly emerged situation, lay out China's stance on the issue, and exert efforts to boost the process with all sides in coordination.     Touching upon the issue of the internal Palestinian dispute between factions, mainly the rival Fatah and Hamas, Wu said Palestinian unity is crucial to solve the Middle East issue.     "Hamas is a major Palestinian faction, which enjoys strong public support," said the envoy, adding that, "it'll be important if Hamas can take an positive attitude toward the peace process and involved in it."     Wu said China is willing to see the success of the internal Palestinian dialogue, and is ready to make efforts on helping Palestinians to achieve national unity.     Wu, former Chinese ambassador to Egypt, was appointed as the special envoy in March this year to replace Sun Bigan.     He has been director of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and also the first Chinese plenipotentiary to the Arab League.     Citing his three-decade long diplomatic experiences in the region, Wu said that he witnessed both the disasters and losses caused by conflicts and the development, stability and opportunities brought by peace tracks between countries in the region.     "The contrast between the two tracks makes me convinced that military confront could not bring about the resolution of the Middle East issue, and the only way out is through peace negotiations," said the envoy.     Bearing the belief, the envoy said he will discuss both his personal experience and China's stance on the Middle East issue with all sides during his mediation, and actively involve in the peace process to fulfill his mission.
