UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Thursday urged the international community, especially developed nations, to speed up intensive efforts to realize the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).     CHINA'S CONTRIBUTION     Wen made the calls in his address to the UN high-level event on the MDGs. He told the meeting China has honored its commitments to the MDGs by dramatically reducing the number of Chinese living in poverty and by providing assistance to least developed countries.     China, the most populous country in the world, has accelerated development mainly through its own efforts and through reform and opening-up since 1978, and has "brought down the number of people in absolute poverty from 250 million to 15 million in less than 30 years," he said.     The nation's free compulsory education, medical care for 800 million farmers, and governance at various levels have all witnessed substantial progress, the Chinese premier said. It is particularly important to increase assistance for least developed countries and regions," he said.     Wen proposed that donor countries double their donations to the World Food Programme in the next five years and that the international community do more to cancel or reduce debts owed by least developed countries and provide zero-tariff treatment to their exports.     Efforts should also be made to improve the working mechanisms for the development goals in the Millennium Declaration and coordinate the functions of international organizations to jointly overcome the difficulties facing developing countries, he proposed. BEIJING  -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is forecasting an 8 percent increase in the country's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the first quarter of 2008. The official government figures come out in mid-April.The bank said in a report issued on Thursday that the CPI would hit 8.2 percent in March, slightly down from the previous month as the effects from the snow chaos that hit China earlier this year died away.Inflation in China took its biggest jump in nearly 12 years in February when it rose 8.7 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Food prices surged 23.3 percent while non-food prices edged up 1.6 percent from the year earlier period.Inflation was mainly fueled by rising food and energy prices in the global market, and compounded by domestic factors that included increased costs and a strong demand, the report said.The new round of global grain price rises, including rice and wheat, might add more pressure to the government's anti-inflation efforts.However, the inflation index would start decelerating in the second half of 2008 as the government's macro controls took effect. The continued global slowdown also weighed on demand and could gradually pull down prices, the report said.China rolled out a series of measures to fight inflation after the government was reshuffled last month. Among the latest moves was an increase in farm subsidies to boost production and curb grain price hikes.

FUZHOU, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 274,300 people had been evacuated by Sunday afternoon in southeast China's Fujian Province as a strong typhoon was approaching, said the provincial flood control headquarters.     About 52,301 fishing boats had also returned to harbor as of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Disaster relief personnel had been helping people on fishing vessels get on shore, said Yang Zhiying, head of the flood control headquarters in Fujian.     Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm of this year, turned into a strong typhoon at 8:00 p.m. Its eye was monitored at the sea about 210 kilometers to the east of Taitung County in Taiwan, according to the provincial observatory.     It moved westward and was forecast to land Taiwan on Sunday night or Monday morning.
