CHENGDU, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Two giant pandas in the United States will fly back home in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan next week, according to local officials.Tai Shan, a 4-and-a-half-year-old male panda born at the National Zoo of Washington D.C., and Mei Lan, a 3-year-old female panda born at Zoo Atlanta, will arrive in Chengdu Feb. 5 after a 14-hour journey from Washington.Experts from the two zoos will escort the two giant pandas back to China.Tai Shan, who was born in July 2005 and raised up in the National Zoo, will return to the Ya'an Bifeng Gorge Breeding Base of Wolong National Nature Reserve.Tai Shan was supposed to get back to China at the age of two. The Chinese government agreed to postpone its return twice in 2007 and 2009 at the request of the National Zoo, where millions of people visited him.Tai Shan's father Tian Tian, 13, and mother Mei Xiang, 12, are also due to return December next year.Mei Lan will return to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.Mei Lan was born in September 2006. Her parents Lun Lun and Yang Yang arrived in Atlanta in November 1999.There are now 13 Chinese giant pandas living in four zoos in the United States.Giant pandas, known for being sexually inactive, are among the world's most endangered animals.There are about 1,600 giant pandas living in China's wild, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu. Another 290 are in captive-breeding programs worldwide, mainly in China.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide were urged Friday to tighten security and step up safety overhaul during the Chinese Lunar New Year and be "ready to handle emergencies to prevent serious accidents."A circular from the Ministry of Public Security told local police authorities to increase scrutiny of fireworks parties, trade fairs, lantern shows, and temple fairs during the Spring Festival holiday which starts Saturday.It said the police should assist in keeping public and traffic order around large events' venues and be ready to handle crime and emergencies.Efforts should be made to strengthen security measures around train stations. Police authorities must release "safety tips" to the public through radio, newspapers and cell phone messages, it said.More than 10,000 large events, including traditional temple fairs, will be held across the country during the seven-day holiday, with more than 320 events expected to attract more than 10,000 people each.The latest ministry statistics show police solved nearly 1,200 homicide cases and 915 human trafficking cases last month.Police also arrested nearly 470 suspects for using telephones to scam or defraud people in January, saving 3.45 million yuan (507,000 U.S. dollars) in economic losses.Last month, the police busted nearly 2,000 bases for illegal fireworks' manufacture, sale, or transportation.The Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, falls on Sunday. URUMUQI, March 12 (Xinhua) -- A severe sandstorm hit Xinjiang's Hotan Prefecture in northwest China on Friday, reducing visibility to zero in some areas, local meteorological observatory said.The fierce sandstorm swept through the prefecture from west to east in the morning, said a spokesman with Hotan's meteorological observatory.The sandstorm, though reducing in severity, would continue to plague the area till March 16, leading to a temperature drop of 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, he added.The sandstorm had affected local traffic and agriculture, according to a statement from the Hotan government.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has pledged fresh measures to fight offensive content transmitted by mobile phones and websites.China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, the country's three mobile carriers, have been required to examine the quality of their business partners, Thursday's China Daily reported Thursday.The MIIT also asked the Internet service providers to supervise the content of websites and close irregular websites.Operators of pornographic websites had been evading supervision from authorities through technical tactics including frequently switching domain names and IP addresses, the paper quoted a report on PC World's online edition as saying.The authorities will introduce a blacklist and the design of content-filtering technology to help network operators stem obscene content from reappearing.The measures aimed to protect the healthy growth of the next generation and clean the social environment, the MIIT said in statement.

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities will standardize all the primary school buses to ensure safety of pupils when they commute between home and school.The school buses refer to those that are able to carry more than 10 children. The set of standards, the first of its kind in the country, require the school buses to bear unified tag, according to the Beijing News on Friday.The tag features two school children on two separate pages of an unfolded book.According to the standards, school buses should have seat belts for each seat and there should be one seat or more for caretakers.Double-deck bus and articulated bus are not allowed to serve as primary school buses for safety concern.The standards also require the bus makers to install a device to record the driving speed, time and mileage of the vehicle.The standards, jointly issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and the Standardization Administration, will come into force on July 1.
