L'AQUILA, Italy, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Thursday called for concerted efforts to tackle various global challenges at the leaders' meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) and five leading emerging economies (G5).     Dai, who attended the summit on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao, delivered a speech entitled "Striving to push forward global economic recovery and enhance regulation of the world economy" to the meeting held in the quake-torn Italian city of L'Aquila, according to a press release issued by the Chinese delegation.     Hu cut short his stay in Italy and skipped the G8 meeting due to the situation in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- China's power consumption declined 3.63 percent year on year in April, larger than the 2.01 percent decrease rate in March, the China Securities News quoted figures from the China Electricity Council (CEC) Friday.     A total of 275.67 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were used in April. The figure for the first four months was 1.06 trillion kilowatt hours, down 4.03 percent from the same period a year ago.     Analysts said the extending decline indicated a soft footing in economic recovery. It is normal that power output and consumption have ups and downs in the process of economic revival.     From January to April, power used by the agriculture and tertiary sectors went up 4.69 percent and 9.04 percent. And that for industrial sector slipped 8.29 percent.     The National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) said on May 13 that power generation fell 3.5 percent last month from a year earlier, to 271.29 billion kilowatt hours. The successful meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in July 2008 on the sidelines of the outreach session of the Group of Eight (G8) summit added more vigor in the enhancement of Sino-Canadian relations, Yang added.     Yang said China and Canada, being important nations of the Asia-Pacific region, share broad interests as well as great potential of bilateral cooperation in every field. Both governments are therefore obliged to devote more efforts to furthering this friendly relationship so as to better tap on this potential for the interests of both peoples. China would work with Canada to handle bilateral relationship from a strategic height and long-term perspective, continuously strengthen bilateral dialogue and communications, respect each other's benefits and concerns and properly handle sensitive bilateral issues so as to guarantee a healthy and smooth development of ties in the future, Yang said.     Kinsella agreed with Yang's comments on bilateral relations and shared Yang's calling for stronger ties while reiterating his understanding and support for the "One-China policy."     He also pledged to advance the good relations between the legislatures of both countries, while stressing the importance of closer communications between young people of the two countries.     The speaker appreciated the constructive role that China has been playing in seeking diplomatic solution of regional conflicts and praised China for deploying navy forces to the waters off the Somali coast to fight the pirates.     Yang Jiechi arrived in Ottawa Sunday for a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Canadian counterpart Lawrence Cannon.
