BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Tuesday called on Iran to "engage constructively" with the P5+1 and to "cooperate fully" with the IAEA to facilitate a satisfactory outcome.     The call was made in a joint statement issued here after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two sides reaffirmed their strong support for a comprehensive and long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through negotiations.     "The two sides agreed that Iran has the right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and it should fulfill its due international obligations under that treaty," said the statement.     The two sides welcomed the talks in Geneva on Oct. 1 between the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and Iran as "a promising start" towards addressing international concerns about Iran's nuclear program, and expressed their readiness to continue that engagement as soon as possible.     They emphasized in the joint statement that all efforts should be made to take confidence building steps and to call on Iran to respond positively to the proposal of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Friday called for continued efforts to further study and practice the Scientific Outlook on Development.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting on further studying and practicing the Scientific Outlook on Development, which emphasizes the well-being of people and comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development.     The CPC launched an 18-month campaign to study and implement the outlook in September last year.     The campaign had so far yielded positive results, Xi said.     The Vice President urged relevant authorities to focus on improving social harmony and stability as well as party building at grassroots levels.     They should also focus on speeding up the transformation of the country's economic development mode, and should make meticulous plans for next year's work, in order to push forward reforms and development and maintain stability, he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Thursday that Japan's move to build facilities on the Okinotori atoll will not change its legal status, as Japan is seeking vast economic interests at the nearby southern Pacific.     According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLS), and based on the natural and geographic situation of the Okinotori atoll, neither exclusive economic zones nor continental shelves should be claimed on it, Spokesperson Jiang Yutold a regular press briefing.     Japan has asked the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to recognize the extended area around the so-called "Okinotori island," 1,740 km south of Tokyo, as its continental shelf, which would enable it to claim a vast surrounding area as an exclusive economic zone.     According to Article 121 of the UNCLS, rocks that cannot sustain human habitation or an economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.     According to Japanese media report, the Japanese government plans to build a port and conduct mineral explorations on the atoll in 2010.     "Building facilities on it would not change the atoll's legal status," Jiang said.     Such a bid did not conform to the international laws of the sea and was against the interests of the international community, she said.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China should keep home prices from long time "abnormal increases" and divert profits made from home price hikes to the public through taxation, a senior property official said here Friday.     Dong Zuoji, director of land planning department of the Ministry of Land and Resources, said home prices would continue to rise as the land in the world's fastest-growing economy is becoming increasingly scarce, but the government should use taxes to give the added value of the land back to society.     "China hasn't seen overcapacity in real estate sector on the whole, otherwise home prices wouldn't have gained so much," he said while attending a meeting held in Beijing.     Dong said the government would increase land supply for subsidized homes and adopt measures to prevent developers from hoarding land.     The government would also guarantee land use for high-tech, high added-value enterprises while limiting that of backward production projects.     Due to a series of supportive measures adopted by the government, China's property sector rebounded strongly this year. Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities rose for the eight straight month in October.     Average house price in Beijing surged 43.7 percent in July from that of January, to 14,500 yuan per square meter, Golden Keys, a property agent said on July 17.

HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday proposed strengthening cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, Japan and South Korea to combat the global financial crisis. "Tackling the global financial crisis should remain the top priority for countries in the region at present," Wen said at the 12th summit between ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea (ASEAN Plus Three) at the Thai beach resort of Hua Hin.     The countries within the ASEAN Plus Three system should further promote integration, peace and prosperity in the region by launching concrete cooperation efforts, he added. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States underlined that each country and its people have the right to choose their own path, and agreed to hold the next round of human rights dialogue in Washington by the end of February 2010, said the China-U.S. joint statement issued Tuesday.     According to the statement, the Chinese and U.S. sides agreed that all countries should respect each other's choice of a development model.     "Both sides recognized that China and the United States have differences on the issue of human rights," said the statement, "Addressing these differences in the spirit of equality and mutual respect, as well as promoting and protecting human rights consistent with international human rights instruments, the two sides agreed to hold the next round of the official human rights dialogue in Washington D.C. by the end of February 2010."     The two sides agreed that promoting cooperation in the field of law and exchanges on the rule of law serves the interests and needs of the citizens and governments of both countries, and decided to convene the China-U.S. Legal Experts Dialogue at an early date.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of China's manufacturing sector stood at 55.2 percent in November, unchanged from the previous month, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) said on Tuesday.     It was the ninth straight month that the PMI reading stayed above 50.     A reading of above 50 suggests expansion, while one below 50 indicates contraction. The PMI includes a package of indices that measure economic performance.     In November, new order index and output index both held steady from figures in the previous month at 58.4 percent and 59.4 percent, respectively.     New export order index was 53.6 percent, down by 0.9 percentage points compared to November while purchasing price index rose by 6.5 percentage points to 63.4 percent.     Only three out of the 20 surveyed sectors reported a PMI index reading below 50, which were paper making and printing, oil processing, and beverages making.
