SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies met Saturday to explore ways of countering the international financial crisis and reviving the world economy.     During the two-day meeting, the APEC leaders were to focus on the financial crisis, climate change, protectionism, supporting a multilateral trading platform, and advancing regional economic integration. Such moves are of vital importance to all members, particularly the developing members, in countering the financial crisis, and conform to the common interests of all relevant parties, Hu said.     "We must be committed to our promises, strongly oppose trade protectionism in all its manifestations, be vigilant against and correct the 'invisible' protectionism acts in various forms, reduce and eliminate trade barriers, and solve trade disputes through dialogue and coordination, thus creating favorable conditions of the full recovery and long-term development of world economy," Hu said.     The Chinese president said China strongly supports trade and investment liberalization and facilitation and is committed to establishing a fair, open, equitable and non-discriminatory multilateral trading mechanism.     "China is ready to work with other members to play a constructive role and advance the Doha Round negotiations, on the basis of locking in the existing achievements and respecting the Doha mandate," he said.     "We are ready to speed up the settlement of the remaining issues and work for early comprehensive and balanced outcomes in the negotiations at an early date in order to achieve the goals of the development round," Hu said.     The Chinese president also made a three-point proposal to APEC for improving its cooperation efficiency:     -- To continue to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, focusing on its own characteristics:     "Through meeting the Bogor Goals on schedule next year by the APEC developed members, the APEC will demonstrate its determination to advance trade and investment liberalization, and oppose trade protectionism," Hu said.     Such a move is of great significance to increasing confidence, expanding regional trade and pushing forward regional economic integration, Hu added.     China supports APEC in "meeting the Bogor Goals on schedule by its developed members" as its priority working agenda, and to advance it steadily, Hu said.     -- To increase input and advance economic and technological cooperation for more fruitful results:     Hu announced that China will allocate 10 million U.S. dollars to establish an APEC cooperation fund in China, to encourage and support relevant agencies and enterprises to participate in APEC economic and technological cooperation.     -- To reform and make innovations to inject new vitality to the APEC mechanism:     APEC should adapt itself to new situations, meet the challenges, and steadily advance its reform and structural construction, the Chinese president said.     Following the first-day session of the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, the Chinese president, together with other leaders of the APEC member economies, met with representatives of the APEC Business Advisory Council.     They exchanged views on opposing protectionism, promoting investment facilitation, climate change negotiations and advancing regional economic integration.     The two-day Economic Leaders Meeting is the culmination of this year's annual APEC meetings, which also include the ministerial meeting, senior officials' meeting and a business summit.     According to Chinese officials accompanying Hu, the Chinese president was to elaborate on China's stance on the battle against the financial crisis and the global economic recovery, China's position on the challenges posed by climate change, food and energy security, and China's views on APEC's future development.     Since APEC's inception in 1989, APEC's total trade has grown 395 percent, significantly outpacing the rest of the world. During the same period, the GDP (in purchasing power parity terms) in the APEC region has tripled, while the GDP in the rest of the world has only less than doubled.     APEC's 21 member economies are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in China's economic hub Shanghai on Sunday night, starting a state visit to China.     Air Force One touched down at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport in heavy rain at about 23:10.     This is Obama's first state visit to China since he assumed the presidency in January. He is also the first U.S. president who paid a state visit to China within one year in office.     This year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the People's Republic of China and the United States.     U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Susan Rice and National Security Advisor James Jones also arrived in Shanghai Sunday night. BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Wednesday published two regulations, pledging to improve media supervision and public access to the courts' case filing, trial, hearing and law enforcement process, as well as to the verdict documents and court affairs.     The two regulations were aimed to improve judicial democracy, ensure judicial justice, and protect the legitimate rights of the litigants and defendants involved, said Sun Jungong, spokesman of the SPC, during a press conference.     According to the regulations, people involved in lawsuits would have access to all relevant information when filing a lawsuit, and would be kept informed of important information during the law enforcement process.     In open-trial cases, the public and journalists could attend the trials after safety checks.     The courts' verdict documents would be published online if they did not include state secrets, teenage criminal records, personal privacy or other contents inappropriate for publication, while the courts' affairs would also be made public.     Meanwhile, the regulations said journalists might face criminal charges if they disclose state or business secrets, impair national and social interests, distort facts when covering on-going trials, violate the reputation rights of judges or people involved in lawsuits, or conduct any other activities that may harm judicial justice.

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China Merchants Securities, a leading domestic brokerage firm, announced Monday that it has set its A-share initial public offering (IPO) price range between 26 yuan (3.8 U.S. dollars) and 31 yuan.     The Guangdong-based brokerage is scheduled to issue no more than 358.5 million shares, it said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange Monday.     The IPO price translates into a price to earnings (P/E) ratio between 47.18 and 56.26 times. BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Xiao Wu, now a student at Oxford University, recalls her life in Britain started off with "depression" six years ago in a renowned board school.     Fresh from China, the reality of the new country failed to meet her expectations.     "I was disappointed to find many of my British classmates just spent plenty of time on parties, instead of study," Xiao Wu says, a straight-A student in China, who struck her teachers and peers as "extraordinarily diligent."     It has taken her long to come to terms with the fact that British students just could be academically excellent as well without "excess hardworking" that was often held dear by their Chinese peers, she says.     "It seems that they could better balance school work and entertainment than most of us," she says.     But for younger Chinese, such culture shock is much less likely as they increasingly share a common international culture and make friends abroad.     Ding Kaiyan, 15, recalls making friends with Ayumi Saito during the latter's school excursion in China in August, 2008.     "We are both veteran players of Popcart (a popular racing game designed in South Korea), fans of NEWS (a Japanese boy band), and lovers of literature," she says. "Although I had not fully mastered Japanese, we hit it off at our first meeting."     One year later, Ding called on Ayumi Saito in Japan's Toyama Prefecture. Before her trip, Ding had glimpsed Japanese pop culture and customs through her Japanese teacher, Matsushita Hiroshi, and on the Internet.     Ding is one of dozens of students at the Northeast Yucai School, in the northeastern Liaoning Province, who have traveled to Japan to meet children their own age over the past six years.     "Globalization is a buzzword for scholars, but for children it just means how they live their lives," said Professor Shi Jinghuan, executive dean of the Institute of Education of the Tsinghua University.     Their favorite foods, clothes and pop stars and cartoon characters can come from any corner of the world, and many of them start to speak English at kindergarten, she says. "That may explain how they develop familiarity.     "The media, especially the Internet, have presented children all over the world with a colorful global village, and brought them closer," she says. "As long as you want to know, the information is at your fingertips."     Shi Junhao, 10, a fifth-grader at Beijing Fangcaodi International School, has just finished a six-week school trip to the U.K. with eight other students.     He made friends with Oliver after establishing that they shared a lot in common. "We were partners on the basketball court, and we both like U.S. President Obama," he says.     In the past four years, about 400 students from Fangcaodi International School have traveled abroad and more than 3,000 others had contact with foreign peers, says Yang Yuan, a teacher at the school. "Our children have shown strong interest in knowing more about the rest of the world."     "For toddlers, smiles and eye contact are enough to initiate friendship," says Cindy Li, a teacher at the SMIC School and Kindergarten in Shanghai, which has 1,800 students from 22 countries and regions, and about 100 foreign teachers.     Respect for other cultures and smashing stereotypes are crucial steps for nurturing open minds in children, says Professor Shi Jinghuan.     Understanding, respect and tolerance can cement friendships between children from all ethnic groups, says Shi.     "Children should know that being different isn't bad."
