KYONGJU, South Korea, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met South Korean Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Kim Kwanyong here Friday.     Xi said China and South Korea, with a long history of friendship, have witnessed strong growth in their relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, and the two countries had set up a strategic and cooperative partnership.     Xi said he met and reached broad consensus with South Korean leaders during the past two days, and made extensive communications with South Korean people from all walks of life. FUZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) will hold talks in Taiwan's Taichung on Dec. 22, according to Thursday's preparatory meeting.     The two organizations are authorized by authorities in the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait issues.     According to a preliminary agreement, ARATS President Chen Yunlin and SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung will meet for the fourth round of talks since they resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.     Zheng Lizhong, standing vice president of the ARATS, and Kao Kung-lian, vice chairman and secretary general of the SEF, decided the ARATS delegation would visit the island between Dec. 21 and 25.     The agenda was agreed on during the preparatory meeting in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait.     The agenda includes discussion of labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in the fields of inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication, avoidance of double taxation and boosting taxation cooperation.     The two organizations are scheduled to hold a symposium on Dec.23 to introduce the mainland investment to the island.     The ARATS delegation will also tour the Taichung City, the surrounding area and the Sun Moon Lake, and leave the island at noon of Dec. 25.     Zheng said talks between the ARATS and the SEF, which negotiate issues deeply concerned by people of both sides, were "remarkable symbolization of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."     He said it shows the two organizations respect each other and "treat each other as equals" in promoting cross-Strait economic cooperation and improving people's livelihood.     The talks were supported and welcomed by people from both sides, Zheng said, adding the upcoming fourth round of talks would take into consideration the desire of people on both sides and the development of cross-Strait relations.     The two sides also discussed the use of relief funds donated by the mainland to Taiwan to combat Typhoon Morakot in August.     The ARATS received 450 million yuan of relief funds and has already delivered one third of it to the SEF. The rest would be sent to the SEF next week, it said.     Both sides agreed that the funds would be used in rebuilding the island's damaged bridges, schools and public facilities.

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged to improve taxation regulations to boost economic development and better ensure people's livelihood.     Li made the remarks when visiting the State Administration of Taxation on Thursday. Taxation is a major measure to pool financial revenue and boost social and economic development, and it also plays an important role in adjusting income distribution and improving people's livelihood, Li said. BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese household electric appliance producer, announced Thursday evening that its net profit in the third quarter rose 48.88 percent year on year to 300.7 million yuan (44.03 million U.S. dollars).     Its net profit in the first three quarters increased 28.7 percent from a year earlier to 966.4 million yuan, the firm said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     The eastern Shandong Province-based company attributed the net profit hike to reduced inventory and improved assets quality.     Equities of the Shanghai-listed firm added 1.28 percent to 18.17 yuan per share Thursday.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday.     The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum.     In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said.     Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period.     Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies.     "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said.     He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.

MANILA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser, Jia Qinglin, and Philippines Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile pledged to boost cooperation between the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Philippine Senate when they met here Thursday.     Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said China-Philipines ties had witnessed healthy development since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1975.     "China and the Philippines share broad common interests," Jia said, highlighting the enhanced mutual political trust, booming economic and trade ties, frequent humanitarian and cultural exchanges and close coordination on international and regional issues. He will also visit Peru, Ecuador and Brazil.

HOHHOT, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China has invested more than 6.5 billion yuan (959 million U.S. dollars) to preserve grasslands in northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, said the regional government.     The money has been spent on returning grazing land to grassland, restoration of natural grassland and sand source control to prevent sandstorm. The efforts have helped reduce the area of degraded grasslands in Inner Mongolia to 500 million mu (33.5 million hectares) from 700 mu since 2000, it said in a statement.     Since the end of the 1990s, successive droughts, overgrazing and inadequate funding on grassland protection have led to deterioration and desertification of the grasslands in the region.     The region has set the goal of increasing the grasslands' vegetation coverage to 42 percent next year and 48 percent in 2015.     The vast autonomous region, which has a grassland area of 1.3 billion mu, plays a key role in maintaining the country's ecological security, especially in preventing desert threat to Beijing and neighboring Tianjin.

BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Heavy fog faded in most Chinese provinces after a cold front from Siberia moving south cleared up the sky on Wednesday. As a result, road, river and air traffic was finally restored after days of disruption in many parts of China.     Traffic on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal resumed at noon after 11 hours of closure, said an official from Yangzhou City of east China's Jiangsu Province Wednesday.     Nearly 100 vessels stranded in Yangzhou have entered the Yangtze River. Highrise buildings are seen shrouded by heavy fog at the financial district of Shanghai, east China, Dec. 2, 2009    But sea areas off Shanghai were still shrouded by heavy fog. In the first three quarters of this year, Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration reported 32 accidents in its administrative area, in which 13 vessels were wrecked and 20 people went missing. Direct economic loss was estimated at 39 million yuan (about five million U.S. dollars).     The administration reminded passing vessels to be ready for emergencies because of the bad weather.     Visibility in east China's Shandong Province rose to more than 1,000 meters. Delayed flights and closed highways had been resumed, said the provincial meteorological bureau.     However, the heavy fog staggered in east China's Anhui Province, north China's Shanxi Province and northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Wednesday.     Visibility was 200 to 50 meters in most parts of Anhui, where police had to reinforce traffic control on highways.     Two of the three flights canceled on Tuesday in Hefei City tookoff Wednesday, though some other flights were delayed.     Visibility in Shanxi was 100 to 20 meters on Wednesday. Flights at the Airport of Yuncheng in Shanxi were postponed.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday again expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urging the U.S. to respect China's core interests and withdraw related arms sales plan.     "The U.S. arms sales to Taiwan infringe upon China's security interest as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and interfere with China's internal affairs," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a statement.     Jiang made the comments in response to a reporter's question on U.S. government approval for Raytheon Company to sell 1.1 billion U.S. dollars of Patriot antimissile system to Taiwan.     "We have raised solemn representations to the U.S. side," said Jiang. "We urge the U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan to avoid undermining China-U.S. cooperation."     Jiang said, "We urge the U.S. to clearly recognize the severe consequences of arms sales to Taiwan, reject the cold war mentality, and adhere to the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially the principles established in the Joint Communique on Aug. 17, 1982."     The "Aug. 17 communique" stated that the U.S. would not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales.     "We also persuade the Raytheon Company to stop pushing or participating in arms sales to Taiwan, and refrain from doing anything that harms China's sovereignty and security interest," Jiang said.
