Lhasa, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Four media organizations from China's neighboring countries will be invited for the first time to cover the annual session of the People's Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region to be held on Jan. 14.     The plenary session of the Regional Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to be held on Jan. 12 will also be open to foreign press.     According to a press conference held by the two sessions on late Saturday, the invitations to the four foreign media were an effort to "let the world know better about a real and new Tibet through an objective visual angle."     Names of the foreign media organizations were not specified.     Tibet authorities also revealed that they will invite diplomats with Nepal's consulate general to Lhasa, capital of the autonomous region, to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the sessions.     There will be nearly 200 journalists from 16 media organizations home and abroad to report the annual sessions this year, the press conference was told.     At the two sessions, report on the work of the regional government will be discussed, as well as local budgets and plans for social and economic developments.

DESTROYER WUHAN, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese naval fleet sailed into the Strait of Malacca on Monday after its departure from China's southernmost island province of Hainan on an escort mission against piracy off Somalia Friday afternoon.     The fleet sailed into Singapore Strait Monday morning after over 20 hours' voyage from the South China Sea and arrived at the Strait of Malacca. It is expected to reach the Indian Ocean Tuesday.     The convoy, which includes two of China's most sophisticated naval destroyers, DDG-169 Wuhan and DDG-171 Haikou, and a supply ship Weishanhu, is heading for the Gulf of Aden to join a multinational patrol in one of the world's busiest sea lanes where surging piracy endangers international shipping. The latest resolution authorized countries to take all necessary measures in Somalia, including in its airspace to stop the pirates. BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged the country's political advisors to make more practical proposals to the government to resolve environmental pollution and other social problems.     Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultation Conference (CPPCC), made the remark in a letter to the CPPCC's first seminar on China's population, resources and environment development concluded in Beijing on Tuesday.     China would have many challenges in achieving steady economic growth and social development next year, which included environmental protection, employment and resources issues, Jia said in the letter.     Political advisors should work together and make proposals and suggestions that could serve the people and country effectively, he said.     The seminar was attended by members of the CPPCC, China's top political advisory body, and experts from companies and research institutes.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Strengthening relations between China and the European Union (EU) will contribute to the world peace, stability and prosperity amid complicated international situations, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Thursday.     The significance of Sino-EU relations has surpassed the bilateral level and is of more and more international significance, Hu said during his meeting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, who is here to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) to be held on Friday and Saturday. BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulatory message to a UN meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People to be held Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York.     Wen extended warm congratulations to the opening of the meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on behalf of the Chinese government.     The Palestinian issue is the core of the Mideast problem. China staunchly supports the restoration of the legal rights of the Palestinian people as well as the Mideast peace process, the message said.     China hopes that Palestine and Israel would stick to the path of peaceful negotiations on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "Land for Peace" principle to establish an independent Palestinian state at an early date, so as to realize peaceful coexistence between the Israeli and Palestinian states, it said.     To resolve the Palestinian issue at an early date is the aspiration of the people in the Mideast as well as the common expectation of the international community, it said.     As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to support the United Nations in playing an important role in solving the Mideast problem and pushing forward the settlement of the Palestinian issue, said the message.     The Chinese government will also work with the international community to make unremitting contributions to peace, stability and development in the Mideast, it added.

GENEVA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum (WEF) is "very proud" that it has managed to maintain "very positive" ties with China, a senior WEF official has said.     "We all know that China is an important factor in the future evolution and development of worldwide economy. So we are all very interested in what China will be doing," said Andre Schneider, managing director and chief operating officer of the Geneva-based organization.     In a recent interview with Xinhua before next week's opening of the 2009 WEF annual meeting, also known as the Davos Forum, in the Swiss Alpine skiing resort Davos.     More than 40 heads of state or government, including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and some 1,400 business leaders, have confirmed their participation at the five-day meeting scheduled to deal with the ongoing financial crisis and other global challenges.     Premier Wen's participation will certainly be "a unique opportunity" for the world to better understand what are the plans of the Chinese leadership to deal with the crisis, Schneider said.     Schneider noted the first two WEF annual meetings of the new champions, dubbed "Summer Davos Forum," were both held in China, in Dalian in 2007 and Tianjin a year later.     The success of the "Summer Davos Forum," a gathering of new multinational companies from China and across the world to explore the mechanisms of continued and sustainable growth, indicated the strong collaboration between the two sides, he said.     The WEF's choice of China as the host of the "Summer Davos Forum" was "an absolutely right one," he said.     Schneider noted that cooperation between the WEF and China started in 1979, when China first sent a delegation to the Davos Forum.     China and its economic growth has been a topic of interest for participants at the Davos Forum in recent years.     In June 2006, the organization opened a representative office in Beijing, which aims to deal with all interactions with China. ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Sunday that China's relations with Ethiopia have been developing quite rapidly in recent years and have been pushed up to a higher level.     He made the statement during talks with Speaker of Ethiopian Council of People's Representatives Teshome Toga.     "Since our countries established foreign relations with each other, especially, since their comprehensive cooperation partnership was formed in 2003, high-level exchanges between our two countries have been more frequent and bilateral trade has been shooting up," Wu said.     "Now our relations have ushered in a new era," he added.     Wu said that both China and Ethiopia are developing countries and therefore face the similar issues such as economic development. The rapid booming of both economies have provided new opportunities for deeper and wider cooperation.     "This is conducive to the welfare and the basic interests of both countries and peoples, as well as constructive to world's peace and prosperity," Wu said.     The Ethiopian speaker agreed with Wu's comments on relations of the two countries and said that Wu's Africa tour, especially, the visit to Ethiopia, is of high importance and can further boost bilateral ties.     Teshome Toga also thanked China for its unconditional support for Ethiopia, adding that the two countries can cooperate better in trade, investment and finance sectors.     He said that Ethiopia will, as it has done in the past, continue to stick to "One China" policy and Wu expressed his appreciation for his Ethiopian counterpart's firm commitment as such.     Wu is on a five-African nation tour. Ethiopia is the third leg of his two-week-long visit to Africa.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Monday hailed China's achievements in promoting cultural and ethical progress in 2008 after some major events, including the May 12 earthquake and the Beijing Olympic Games.     In both events, China displayed its "national spirit and the spirit of the times", Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, told a plenary conference of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress.     Li, who presided over the conference as the head of the commission, attributed the achievements to the staunch leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary.     Li called for efforts to build up the system of socialist core values and strengthen cultural and ethical progress so as to create a sound environment for "continuing ideological emancipation, persisting in the reform and opening up, promoting scientific development, and making new victories over building a well-off society in an all-round way."     In 2009, the development of ethical and cultural progress would focus on the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he said.     He called for efforts to deal with moral, cultural and Internet-related problems and try to help youth to grow in a healthy way.     Li said the important role of boosting cultural and ethical progress was a common responsibility for the whole society.     Present at the conference were Liu Yunshan, member of both of the Political Bureau and Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and Liu Yandong, a Political Bureau member and state councilor. Both are deputy chairpersons of the central commission.
