BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States agreed here Tuesday to further collaboration to jointly research in the health sector and in the control of diseases, especially pandemics, according to a joint statement issued after the talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The joint research will include that on stem cells. Both sides will deepen cooperation on global public health issues, including the prevention, surveillance, reporting and control of the A/H1N1 influenza, avian influenza, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, said the statement.     The two sides will also enhance cooperation on food and product safety and quality, it added.

GUANGZHOU, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's railway authorities are gearing up for a real-name ticket selling system to stop ticket scalping during the upcoming Spring Festival traffic rush. The pilot system announced Friday requires passengers to show their ID cards or other identification documents when purchasing train tickets at 37 stations in the southern Guangdong and Hunan provinces, and also the southwestern province of Sichuan.     Millions of migrant workers from inland provinces like Sichuan and Hunan work in Guangdong, known as China's "factory of the world."     The system will take effect during the Spring Festival traffic peak season, from Jan. 30 to March 30. The Spring Festival, or China's Lunar New Year, falls on Feb. 14 this year. During each Spring Festival, I had to pay scalplers almost double the price for a ticket back home," said a migrant worker from Hunan.     "And the risk of buying fake tickets was always there," he said.     Shi Yanhai, a migrant worker from Sichuan, said she hadn't been back home for five years because it was too hard to buy a train ticket during the traffic peak.     "Hopefully I'll be able to buy a ticket this year after the real-name system takes effect," she said.     Nearly 80 percent respondents believed that the new system would help stop ticket scalping and make tickets purchasing easier during the holiday, according to an online survey by sohu.com, one of China's major internet portals.     Although welcomed by the majority, the new ticket selling system is faced with challenges. Some said the new rule might make train travel more complicated.     "I now only need to tell the ticket seller the date and destination of my trip. BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter Scale hit a border area between northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Saturday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.     The epicenter was at 38.2 degrees north latitude and 106.6 degrees east longitude.     Xinhua reporters in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia, said tremor was felt in the downtown area.     No casualties have been reported.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday visited Canterbury University to open the second Confucius Institute in New Zealand.     Li said during the opening ceremony that cultural and educational cooperation are important parts of relations between China and New Zealand.     China has become the largest source of overseas students and the fastest growing source of international tourists to New Zealand, while people in New Zealand are taking a strong interest in studying the Chinese language and getting acquainted with Chinese culture, he said.     The new Confucius Institute, jointly founded by Canterbury University and China's Huazhong Science and Technology University, represents another achievement of the exchanges and cooperation between the two nations, Li said.     He said he hoped the institute would become a link between the two countries in cultural and educational exchanges. BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will meet here Wednesday with US President Barack Obama, who is on his first state visit to China since his January inauguration.     They will have a working lunch before Obama's sightseeing visit to the Great Wall in the north suburb of the Chinese capital, which will be another chance for the US head of state, who toured the Imperial Palace Tuesday, to learn more about the ancient Chinese civilization.     Obama will conclude his fist visit to China and fly to the Republic of Korea, the last leg of his four-state Asian tour, in the afternoon.     He arrived in China's economic hub Shanghai Sunday night to kick off this visit as guest of his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.     Hu held talks with him in Beijing on Tuesday and they met international reporters for about 40 minutes after the talks, both pledging to further bilateral ties.     Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo also met Obama on Tuesday, several hours before a state banquet in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the two sides spoke highly of the tremendous development achieved since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago and reached consensus on further bilateral ties.
